Craig Finn is known for developing richly defined characters. His storytelling skills strike a remarkable balance between creating a strong narrative and leaving spaces for his audience to fill in the blanks with their own imaginations, their own set of life experiences.
He considers himself a child of Minneapolis, and that often informs his writing. It's especially evident in the case of Separation Sunday, The Hold Steady's second album. Released in 2005, that conceptual work features well-drawn, vivid characters whose stories are deeply woven into the fabric of that city. "It's not lost on me that I wanted to tell stories about the people where I was from," Finn says.
