Deface the Music
ARTIST: Utopia
RELEASE: 1979
INTERVIEWEES: Todd Rundgren, Kasim Sulton, Willie Wilcox
On the title track of their 1979 album London Calling, The Clash memorably sang, "Phony Beatlemania has bitten the dust." In truth, it hadn't. So why shouldn't Utopia get in on the fun? On paper, at least it made a kind of sense for a group like Utopia to attempt something along those lines.
Perhaps perversely, Todd Rundgren recalls thinking, "Get sued by The Beatles? We could only hope to get sued by The Beatles!" And from there the idea of Deface the Music: an entire album of Beatles pastiches was born.
