Don't Crush That Dwarf, Hand Me the Pliers
ARTIST: Firesign Theatre
RELEASE: 1970
INTERVIEWEES: David Ossman, Phil Proctor
In 1970 the Firesign Theatre recorded and released its masterwork, Don't Crush That Dwarf, Hand Me the Pliers. A sort of radio play, the record would be filled with in-jokes, decontextualized punchlines that had their setups on previous (or later) albums, arcane literary references, on-target skewering of pop culture and much more. And Don't Crush was a proper concept album. Firesign Theatre wasn't a rock band, but the group brought a decidedly rock sensibility to the medium of the comedy record.
